Creative Studio Photography Using Beige Greco Wall

Step behind the scenes for an in-depth look at a stunning photoshoot by photographer Lisa Asp, featuring the Beige Greco Wall. This blog explores the creative vision behind each setup, breaks down the technical elements from lighting decisions to camera and lens choices and walks through the process of transforming an initial concept into powerful final images. It’s an inside look at where artistic vision, teamwork, and technical skill intersect in photography.In this session, the photographer set out to capture the theme of beauty through the lens of pet photography.

Instead of relying on a soft or conventional interpretation, beauty was reimagined inspired by high-end editorial imagery. Influences from glamour magazines guided the use of dramatic lighting, bold styling, and confident presentation, resulting in a striking and elevated visual narrative.

CHOOSING THE BACKDROP

Backdrops in soft gray tones, warm taupes, subtle florals, or with a painterly finish are excellent choices. These types of backdrops serve as a versatile foundation that can be easily reimagined to create a variety of looks. When you plan to use the same backdrop across multiple sessions, even a touch of visual texture can make a significant impact and keep each shoot feeling fresh.

Old School Glamour Inspired

The session began with wardrobe experimentation. The first look featured a flowing dress draped around the dog’s neck and cascading down her body. While visually elegant, the dog was clearly uncomfortable, prompting a quick shift in direction. The next outfit a striking red jacket paired with a necklace immediately elevated the editorial feel and photographed well.

Originally, the plan included a wig and headpiece to push the glamour concept further. However, the dog showed little tolerance for anything placed on her head. One brief moment with the wig partially on resulted in a charming image before the idea was abandoned in favor of her comfort. The final outfit, a faux fur coat paired with pearls, proved to be the perfect choice. She relaxed instantly, confidently lounging in the fur, allowing her personality to shine.

For a 9-month-old foster dog, her performance during the shoot was exceptional. She remained calm, expressive, and cooperative, making the session both productive and enjoyable. By the end, it was clear that she embodied the theme beautifully.

Lighting THE SCENE

Lighting was carefully structured using three Flashpoint strobes.

• The main light was positioned camera left at approximately 90 degrees with a softbox, set to 1/4 power, creating defined yet flattering illumination.
• A rim light was placed in the back right corner with a strip box at 1/4 power, adding separation from the background and enhancing texture.
• A fill light was mounted on the ceiling just above the camera at 1/32 power, providing subtle shadow control without flattening the image.

This three-light configuration balanced drama and softness, reinforcing the beauty and glamour aesthetic.

Camera Specs

Lisa used a Canon R5 with a 70–200mm lens, set to 1/200 sec at f/5, to achieve a clean, editorial look with strong subject isolation.

POST-Production & Final Thoughts

This photoshoot highlighted the importance of flexibility when working with animals. By prioritizing the dog’s comfort and responding to her cues, Lisa was able to create images that felt both polished and authentic. Every creative decision from wardrobe choices to lighting adjustments was made with the subject in mind.The result was a series of portraits that felt glamorous, expressive, and full of character. More than just a pet, the foster dog became the star of the shoot confident, captivating, and undeniably beautiful.

Lisa enjoys volunteering her time with several pet rescues photographing their adoptable animals, fostering and assisting in their fundraisers and food drives. Her love of animals has grown into wildlife (and landscape) photography as well. She is the current president of the International Society of Animal Photographers, a two-time past president of the Twin Cities Professional Photography Association, Founder and Director of the Animal Image Makers Conference, a PPA Councilor and PPA-Aproved Juror.
