Creative Studio Photography Using Floral Wall Backdrop
WITH RUSS TURNER
Follow along for an exclusive behind the scenes look at two incredible shoots from photographer Russ Turner, featuring the "Floral Wall" backdrop. We’ll dive into the creative inspiration that shaped each concept, break down the technical details from lighting choices to camera and lens setup, and explore the thought process behind turning an idea into striking final images. This is a closer look at how vision, collaboration, and technical precision come together in artistic photography.
CHOOSING THE BACKDROP
Backdrops that feature soft greys, warm taupes, muted florals or have a painterly quality are goof options to look for. A backdrop with these qualities acts as a canvas that can be quickly restyled to deliver multiple looks. A little visual texture goes a long way when you plan to reuse the same drop for multiple shoots.
Dark Alice in Wonderland Shoot
This shoot came together in an organic and collaborative way, with the set itself guiding the creative direction. Photographer Russ Turner began by building the scene around a richly textured floral wall paired with a custom Background Town print floor drop. The combination immediately set a moody, storybook tone, allowing the background to do more than simply support the subject. It becomes a key character in the visual narrative.
When the model Hannah stepped onto the set, inspiration struck instantly. Seeing the floral textures and layered tones, she envisioned how perfectly they would complement her Alice in Wonderland costume. Rather than leaning into a whimsical or traditional take, Russ decided to explore a darker, more grungy interpretation of Alice, adding depth and edge to the concept. To strengthen that connection, silk floral elements were incorporated, echoing both the Wonderland theme and the flowers already woven into the backdrop.

Lighting THE SCENE
From a technical standpoint, the lighting was designed to enhance texture and atmosphere without overpowering the scene. A Godox AD600Pro with an octobox was positioned front left at a 45 degree angle as the key light, shaping the model's features while keeping the mood soft and cinematic. A white reflector was used for gentle fill, subtly lifting shadows without flattening the image.
To ensure the background held its presence, a Godox AD200Pro was added as a dedicated background light, bringing out the details and depth in the floral wall and floor drop. This balance between subject and environment was essential in maintaining the immersive, story driven feel of the shoot.
Camera Specs
Russ shot on a Canon R6 Mark II paired with a Canon RF 24–105mm f/2.8, allowing flexibility in framing while maintaining sharp detail.
POST-Production & Final Thoughts
In post-production, the goal was to stay true to what was created in camera. Retouching was kept light and intentional, preserving the natural textures, tones, and atmosphere established in the studio. The final images reflect a cohesive vision one rooted in collaboration, thoughtful set design, and a shared creative instinct that transformed a simple backdrop into a dark, modern Wonderland.

Professional Headshot and Makeup Test Shoot
This shoot with photographer Russ Turner was designed with both creativity and practicality in mind, blending a professional headshot session with a makeup test. Using the Floral Wall backdrop paired with a Backgroundtown custom print floor drop, the set offered a textured yet refined environment that could support clean, modern portraits while still allowing room for artistic expression.
Model and makeup artist Sam played a central role in shaping the visual direction of the shoot. Drawing inspiration directly from the florals and weathered textures in the backdrop, Sam selected tones and colors that felt intentional and cohesive. This thoughtful color harmony helped tie the subject seamlessly into the environment, elevating the images beyond standard headshots while maintaining a polished, professional feel.

Lighting the scene
From a technical standpoint, Russ kept the lighting deliberately simple to ensure the focus remained on the subject. The key light a Godox AD600Pro with an octobox was positioned front left at a 45-degree angle, providing soft, flattering light. A white reflector was used for fill, gently softening shadows without sacrificing dimension. To add separation and depth, background and hair lighting were introduced using a Godox AD100Pro, while select color images incorporated a Godox AD200Pro with MagMod gels to subtly enhance mood and visual interest. These lighting choices allowed for variety within the shoot while maintaining a consistent, professional aesthetic.
Camera Specs
Russ photographed using a Canon R6 Mark II, paired with both the Canon RF 24–105mm f/2.8L and the Canon RF 70–200mm f/2.8L, offering versatility for tighter headshots and slightly wider compositions.
POST-Production & Final Thoughts
Editing was intentionally kept minimal to highlight the subject and makeup. The final result is a collection of clean, refined headshots that balance artistry with practicality images well-suited for websites and social media, that showcases the thoughtful lighting, cohesive styling, and the creative collaboration that brought the shoot together.
