Creative Studio Photography Using Fall Fascination Cool
WITH LISA ASP
In this particular session, Lisa Asp’s “Fall Fascination Cool” shoot is designed to capture and preserve a fleeting stage in this young puppy’s life. Rather than relying on an elaborate concept, the photographer approached the session with simplicity in mind, aiming to create timeless, classic portraits that highlight the pup’s natural charm. This blog dives into the technical choices from lighting design to camera and lens selection guiding readers through the process of creating lasting memories for clients.
CHOOSING THE BACKDROP
Backdrops in soft gray tones, warm taupes, or with a painterly finish are excellent choices. Painted backdrops provide rich visual depth and give a sense of emotion. With high-quality printing and realistic strokes, these classic backdrops add dimension to an image while maintaining full control over lighting and composition.
Classics and Masters backdrops serve as a versatile foundation that can be easily reimagined to create a variety of looks. When you plan to use the same backdrop across multiple sessions, even a touch of visual texture can make a significant impact and keep each shoot feeling fresh.
Camera Specs
The session was captured using a Canon R5 paired with a versatile 28-105mm lens. The 28–105mm focal range provided the ability to easily transition between wider environmental portraits and tighter, more intimate compositions without needing to change lenses.
This adaptability was especially valuable when working with a young, fast-moving subject, ensuring that key moments were captured seamlessly while maintaining a smooth and efficient workflow.

Lighting THE SCENE
Lighting played a critical role in shaping the final images. Two Flashpoint strobes were carefully positioned to create dimension and polish.
- The primary light source, a Flashpoint Xplor600 fitted with a large softbox, was positioned camera left at approximately 90 degrees and about three feet off the ground. This placement created soft, directional light that defined the puppy’s features while maintaining a natural look. The gentle falloff added depth without overwhelming the subject.
- A secondary fill light, also a Flashpoint Xplor600 with a medium softbox, was mounted above the photographer and positioned roughly ten feet back from the subject. This light was aimed straight on, subtly lifting shadows and balancing the overall exposure.
- Complementing these was a kicker light with a strip modifier, placed behind the subject at a 45-degree angle on the back right side and about five feet off the ground. This added a subtle rim highlight, helping separate the puppy from the background and enhancing dimensionality.
POST-Production & Final Thoughts
The backdrop, “Fall Fascination Cool,” proved to be an ideal choice for the session. Its warm neutral tones complemented the puppy but was dark enough for the subject to stand out. This allowed the subject to remain the focal point. In the end, the shoot succeeded through thoughtful execution in a set of portraits that feel both polished and classic, preserving a special stage in the puppy’s life.
