The Power of Print in 2026:
How to Turn Digital Files Into Profitable Keepsakes

WITH BETHANY ELLEN

An all too common phrase I've been hearing lately is: “IT’S A DIGITAL AGE….” Give me a break. We’ve been in a “totally digital age” since 1999. There has been fear mongering about the extinction of our profession since before I was even in the profession, selling cameras at a Best Buy in 2012. The sky has been falling for photographers for many years, and wouldn’t you know, print photography is dying? It’s been dying for years now! Everyone keeps yelling about it. But it's all lies. The harsh truth is clients are printing their photos, they’re just not ordering it from you. Even in the digital age, clients crave memories they can hold in their hands, display in their homes, and pass down through generations. It’s not your job to decide what’s dead, it’s your job to provide your clients with the best possible experience. Digital galleries are convenient and fast. I’ll even catch myself wanting to please a client and not have to do the whole experience, especially when life gets busy. But prints? Prints are emotional. Prints tell a story in a way a swipe-through camera roll never quite can. For my niece Ellie Grace’s 9-month Grow With Me session, I wanted to lean fully into that feeling. I styled her session using the Heart In The Clouds 2 backdrop from BackgroundTown.

CHOOSING THE BACKDROP

The cloud-inspired tones of the Heart In The Clouds 2 backdrop created an airy, editorial look while still feeling soft enough for a baby milestone session.

It’s a dreamy setup that instantly felt timeless, soft, and worthy of becoming wall art instead of just another digital delivery. I’ve also been dying to use this teeny tiny bathtub in my studio, and she can finally sit up! Therefore, it became time to have the perfect little girly session.

Why Print Matters More Than Ever

The average family takes thousands of photos every year. Most are never printed. They stay buried in camera rolls, forgotten on social media feeds, or lost when devices are upgraded. But when a photograph is printed, it becomes part of a family’s daily life. It hangs in hallways. It sits framed on desks. It’s tucked into albums that children eventually inherit.

It’s actually proven through studies that a child’s sense of belonging and satisfaction are increased when their photos are hanging on the walls. Clients may initially ask for “just the digitals,” but what they truly value is the feeling attached to the memory. It’s our job to help bridge that gap between convenience and connection.

Creating Images Worth Printing

One of the biggest shifts I’ve noticed over the past few years is that clients are far more likely to invest in prints when the session itself feels intentional and elevated. That doesn’t necessarily mean complicated.

For Ellie Grace’s session, the magic came from simplicity. My entire goal was to create a piece of the album we’ve been building since before she was born. Mom already has a maternity and newborn album, but this is all about her first year with us. These prints are starting to matter even more as we prep for her first birthday (don’t get me started, I’m emotional). When designing sessions with print products in mind, a few things make a huge difference.

  • Clean, timeless color palettes
Note: this doesn’t mean beige. We used TONS of pink. Timeless to me means that we kept the lighting fairly simple and the styling fairly minimal. I literally threw her in a random tutu I’ve had for a while. While there are props in the scene, nothing indicates a year or a trend.
  • Cohesive styling
  • Intentional negative space for wall art crops
  • Texture and dimension that photograph beautifully in large format
  • Setups that feel classic rather than trendy

Clients often don’t know why an image feels print-worthy. They just know when it does.

Selling the Experience Instead of the File

In 2026, successful print sales rarely come from simply adding a print shop link to an online gallery. The photographers seeing strong product sales are creating an experience around printed artwork.

That might look like:

  • Mocking up wall galleries for clients
  • Offering heirloom albums
  • Showing sample products during consultations
  • Designing sessions specifically with albums or wall collections in mind
  • Educating clients on archival quality versus consumer printing

When clients can visualize their photographs as finished artwork, they’re much more likely to invest. A digital file feels unfinished. A framed portrait feels complete.

The Emotional Side of Heirloom Products

Even for my clients that aren’t related to me, the milestone sessions always get me. The gummy smiles, the tiny teefies (and yes, teefies is a word when you photograph babies), the way babies are suddenly full of personality while still very much little. Those details change almost overnight. Photographing Ellie Grace reminded me how important it is to preserve those stages beyond social media posts. One day, these images won’t just matter to parents. They’ll matter to the child in them.

That’s the real power of print.

Albums become family artifacts. Framed portraits become part of a home’s identity. Even small keepsakes like matted prints or folio boxes carry emotional weight that digital galleries simply can’t replicate.

Turning Print Into a Sustainable Revenue Stream

For photographers, print sales are also one of the most powerful ways to increase profitability without constantly adding more sessions to the calendar.

Instead of relying entirely on volume, printed products create opportunities to:

  • Increase average client spend
  • Deliver a more luxury experience
  • Differentiate your brand
  • Build stronger emotional connections with clients
  • Create repeat customers who value heirloom products

And importantly, prints allow your work to continue living in the real world.

If you’re ever curious as to what happens if social media goes dark, ask yourself what your Myspace photos are doing. I know that there’s a lasting legacy to Facebook or Instagram, but nothing is guaranteed.

The Shift Toward More Private Memories

Another major shift happening in 2026 is the growing conversation around digital privacy, especially when children are involved. More families are becoming intentional about what they share online, how often they post their children, and where those images ultimately live. Parents are increasingly aware that not every meaningful moment needs to exist publicly on the internet to matter. That mindset has made printed photographs feel even more valuable.

When memories move beyond social media and into tangible artwork, they become more personal. More intimate. More connected to the family itself instead of an algorithm. For many clients, albums and framed portraits now serve a deeper purpose. They allow families to celebrate their children’s milestones without feeling pressured to constantly post every moment online. That doesn’t mean digital galleries are going away. Clients still love the convenience and flexibility of digital files. But physical artwork offers something entirely different, a way to preserve memories intentionally, beautifully, and privately.

Ellie Grace’s 9-month session felt like the perfect example of that balance. The soft, dreamy styling created with the Heart In The Clouds 2 backdrop felt timeless in a way that deserved more than a temporary social media post. These are the kinds of images that belong in albums, framed in nurseries, and tucked into family keepsake boxes long after trends and platforms change.

Final Thoughts

As photography continues evolving in the digital age, printed artwork is becoming less of an “extra” and more of a luxury experience clients genuinely crave.

The photographers who thrive in 2026 won’t just deliver galleries. They’ll deliver permanence.

Ellie Grace’s session with the Heart In The Clouds 2 backdrop was a reminder that some images deserve more than screen time. They deserve to exist physically as keepsakes, heirlooms, and pieces of a family’s story.

Because at the end of the day, digital files are convenient. But prints are what last.
