Creative Studio Photography Using Victorian Fence
WITH RUSS TURNER
Follow along for an exclusive behind the scenes look at two incredible shoots from photographer Russ Turner featuring the Victorian Fence. We’ll dive into the creative inspiration that shaped each concept, break down the technical details from lighting choices to camera and lens setup, and explore the thought process behind turning an idea into striking final images. This is a closer look at how vision, collaboration, and technical precision come together in artistic photography.
CHOOSING THE BACKDROP
Photographer Russ Turner’s latest fine art portrait session began with the selection of Victorian Fence, a backdrop by Laura Dark that evokes a moody autumn twilight and a mysterious world just beyond the fence. The atmospheric setting immediately inspired a Victorian-themed concept, blending historical fashion with the cinematic feel of a foggy evening.
Set the Scene With Woredrobe and Props
Model Lady Thorn (@ladythorn_ladylounge on Instagram) arrived with several wardrobe options, and the final selection was a Victorian ladies’ riding outfit that perfectly complemented the scene. Her flowing skirt added texture and movement, while the blue riding coat harmonized with the cooler tones of the backdrop. A ladies’ top hat and antique book completed the look, suggesting the story of a Victorian woman returning home from the library or a book club as evening mist settled around her.
Camera Specs
The series was photographed using a Canon R6 Mark III and Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 lens, with the aperture held at f/2.8 and the shutter speed hovering around 1/200 second. Turner typically uses Canon’s ISO Low setting of 50 for studio portraits, favoring the rich color and exceptionally clean image files it produces, even though the lower sensitivity requires additional light output. Another important creative choice was the use of a ½-strength black mist filter. This filter gently softened fine details and gave the highlights a more luminous appearance, complementing the shallow depth of field and reinforcing the atmospheric softness already present in the backdrop. Together, these camera settings and optical effects helped balance crisp subject detail with an ethereal, painterly finish.

Lighting THE SCENE
To bring the scene to life, the photographer used a carefully controlled lighting setup designed to create depth while preserving the soft, atmospheric mood. The key light was a Godox AD600Pro paired with a 36-inch SMDV Speedbox Flip36 Pro fitted with a grid. This combination provided directional yet soft illumination, shaping Lady Thorn’s features and defining the rich textures of her clothing. A white reflector filled in the shadows, maintaining detail without sacrificing dimension. For separation from the backdrop, a Godox AD200 with a gridded stripbox supplied a subtle rim and hair light, while a second Godox AD200 and gridded stripbox illuminated the backdrop just enough to reveal its details and establish a convincing sense of place.
For a portion of the series, Turner introduced an additional creative element with a Godox AD100 fitted with a blue MagMod gel. Positioned just outside the frame and adjusted to varying power levels, the light produced a blue haze directly in camera. The effect enhanced the misty twilight atmosphere while drawing out the cool blue tones in both Lady Thorn’s riding coat and the backdrop. Rather than relying entirely on post-processing to establish the mood, this technique allowed Turner to build the desired ambience during the shoot itself. The resulting interplay of colored light, shadow, and soft background detail helped give the portraits a dreamlike, almost cinematic quality.
POST-Production & Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the Victorian Fence session demonstrates how thoughtful styling, intentional lighting, and subtle in-camera effects can transform a studio backdrop into an immersive visual story. Lady Thorn’s period-inspired wardrobe and expressive presence provided the foundation, while Turner’s layered lighting brought out the textures, cool tones, and mysterious depth of the scene. From the directional key light to the blue haze and luminous highlights, each element contributed to the impression of a quiet Victorian evening suspended between reality and imagination. The finished portraits invite viewers to wonder where Lady Thorn has been, where she is going, and what stories might lie beyond the fence.
